What is P/S fluid?

Forgive me for being an idiot, but does anybody know what exactly is in power steering fluid? Is it oil? If so, what's the viscosity? How do people rate it?
SAABTECH suggested to me tonight that I flush and replace w/ GM fluid in hopes of stopping my newly acquired leak. Also recommended a stopleak called "solder seal"
I'm interested to know the difference between the GM fluid and the Valvoline Synthetic that JD recommended.
