Yes, remove the radio cage. The vent tubes can be unhooked by popping off the metal retaining ring which is held on by two plastic "fingers"- I can usually pull the panel just far enough out from the dash to get one of my own fingers back there and release the ring. Once the ring is released, the entire vacuum tube network detaches in a single interface which only fits together one way. When you see how this works, you will thank the engineer who saved you the trouble of sorting out all of those hoses...
Note that the 4 long bolts holding the instrument panel have rings etched near the threaded portion. 1,2,3,4 rings from left-most bolt to right side.
