The only way for them to make it perfectly "right" is to replace the case. ie. replace the transmission. I don't forsee any car dealer doing this for even their best customer. Depending upon where the crack is in the case and accessibility they may be able to repair the case in the car....probably not though. They will most likely have to remove the engine transmission assembly in order to fix the problem and at that point there is no reason to implement "work-around" cures to the problem.
NUMBER ONE: If this car is a 5spd with only 80K on the tranny, I would make sure they don't try and replace the transmission with a used transmission from another vehicle and call it good. If this is an Auto transmission I would request a replacement rebuilt transmission as the 80K mark is the exact mileage where most AT cars have tranny problems.
NUMBER TWO: I would accept a welding fix only if they stand behind the repair in the future as with any aluminum welding there are far too many variables to insure a long lived weld
Good luck and post a follow up to let me know what they did for you.
