I own a 87' turbo, with an automatic shifter. The engine is a 155 hp, and it has ca. 164 000 miles on the clock. In general experience the automatic doesn't allow for speedy acceleration to begin with, but when at speed the turbo kicks like mad. Overtaking is no problem, riding on the freeway is a breeze.
In the time I've had my car, there's never been any problems except the faulty window winder, see earlier post. Also, one of the tubes connecting the radiator to the engine went bust, but fixing that was simple.
Some day I'm sure I'll convert to 5 speed, as I'm not too thrilled by the autos performance compared to the available power. Note that my car has had the gearbox changed once, about 40 000 miles ago. I don't know how older Borg-Warners behave, but this one shifts nicely so I'll keep it for a while. If you do buy an automatic, be sure to adjust the kickdown-wire that goes to the throttle. My kickdown was just plain annoying until I did this, shifting down when totally unneccessary.
Good luck!
