I'm shopping for new summer tires for my '86 SPG with stock 15x5.5" rims. I've heard that installing wider tires doesn't help
handling at all, due to mismatched rim/tire width and sidewall issues.
My question is: Is there any compelling reason NOT to go to a 205/50-15 tire? I've found that the performance tire selection
seems to be quite a bit better in the wider size. In my price/performance range, I can get Bridgestone potenza RE950 for $71
each or RE92 for $63 each in 195/60-15 or go to 205/50-15 and get Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 for $60 or Yokohama AVS intermediate for $66.
I'd like to try the Kumho tires, but I don't want to get tires which won't work well with my rims. Will I be degrading my
performance with wider tires, or is it an even trade-off?
The car goes in for a full alignment tomorrow, and I'd like to put new rubber on it within a week or so.
