Assuming that you have a 16-valve 900, the temperature sensor beneath the thermostat housing just sends the coolant temperature to the dash gauge. That won't have an effect on the idle.
The NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) sensor is the one that sends a signal to the ECU to control the relative fuel richness. It's located between cylinders 2 & 3 and has a blue electrical connector (on my '88 and '89, anyway.)
Check Sobstory.com or one of the other sponsors. Mine was under $30 +shipping. It's an easy replacement.
Are you sure that it's temperature-related instead of a vacuum problem?
