The main feeling I always got from the 318 was that it was a great chassis with waaaay too little power (I prefer the 325is if I had to make a choice of 3 series cars, but even it just doesn't have the kick I'd expect from "the ultimate driving machine"). When new, it made it essentially an inexpensive BMW for those folks who wanted the BMW name (purely for the sake of the name because the performance isn't there). Today, it is a neat little car that, for the 80's models, is relatively easy to work on if you have a modicum of mechanic talent and prefer decent milage. Parts are too expensive, but they are plentiful in junkyards. The 93 may be getting a little more computerized than I prefer...but I haven't really played with any BMW newer than about an '89.

I did a lot of shopping early this year, intending on getting a 325 - but found I could get a lot more car for the money with a Saab...and I also like having a car that, in Houston, is extremely rare (I realize this isn't the case across the country). You can hardly cross the street without getting hit by an early 3-series BMW while classic Saab owners have to recover from the shock of seeing each other before they can remember to wave.

If you're getting a good deal on the 318, I'd say go for it...but it won't hold a candle to a 900 turbo for performance...
