The 'fix for popping out' is posted as a link below. It is relatively painless and probably not a pinion bearing. The whine may be a pinion bearing. I would change the oil in the tranny. Try AmsOil series 2000 20W50 (preferred) or Mobil1 20W50. It may help longevity, or it may be too far gone. No way to tell from here. The whine may not be all that bad. I had a whine in one NA car which was cured by a lube change (for now, I know it is there, but i cannot hear it any more). With this old of a car, you may also want to check the RHS tripod. Your transmission whine may be assisted by one of these going out. On my example, the whine was accompanied by a vibration on accel. See if there is any play radially or rotationally on the inner tripod on the RHS. If so, replace the tripod and possibly the inner driver. This is all easy work in your own garage.
