Hello all-
Once again, I ask for help regarding my friend's 86 base 900. This time, the problem is an oil leak. Lemme tell the story:
A few days ago, she stopped by and asked me what it meant when the oil light comes on. I went out and checked the oil in her car, and sure enough it was about 1/8th of an inch below the low mark on the dipstick. No problem, I added a quart. I didn't see any evidence of a leak, so I just chalked it up to the old 8v engine buring off some oil (it had been about 4-5k miles since the oil was last changed). I had her drive it a mile or two the next day and bring it back to me.
The next day, it had already lost about 1/2 of the oil I had added - it was down around the low mark again. So, I started a more thorough investigation. Turned out that the oil filter was wet with oil, so I assumed maybe it was a little loose. There was some oil on the items surrounding the filter, too. I changed the oil, and I made sure to put the new filter on tight enough.
She drove the car without any reported problems for several days. Then, I drove it today for a few miles. I popped the hood to make sure things were doing well, and I was greeted by a whisps of oily smoke. Turns out that the area around the filter had even more oil on it.
To sum things up - I'm guessing that something near the oil filter has a small leak, but I had no idea what. What should I start looking at? Anyone ever have a leak in this area?
Thanks!
-Nate
