88 900S 5sp problem pulling fault codes

I tried pulling fault codes this morning as my Check Engine light has been illuminated for a couple weeks. I used a jumper wire from the check socket and followed the procedure in the Haynes manual (I know, I know, I should get a Bentley).
As instructed, I turned key to the "on" position and applied ground to the jumper. Light turned off as it's supposed to. Removed ground as instructed, at which time the light's supposed to illuminate for a few seconds, then begin flashing codes. In my case, the light simply stayed illuminated and did not flash any codes. As an experiment I again applied ground, and the light again turned off. And stayed off.
This would be fine except that I'm trying to diagnose a failed NOx emissions test and was hoping the engine codes would help narrow my search. Anyone have experience with this procedure and can tell me what I did wrong if anything? Thanks!
