A/C compressor bearings? - a little long

I have a 1989 900s 4dr, 5spd. While driving there was momentary hesitation in any gear followed by an engine light. Seemed like a lot of noise from my a/c compressor (which has never worked for cooling the car anyway in the 2 years I have had it, but I'm young and put up with it) and guessed it was the bearings. While driving I would hear the belts slip when it was having problems with accelerating, but the belts are tight. Again, that lead me to the bearings. I sprayed the a/c wheel with quite a bit of silicon spray and the noise disappeared, no more hesitation, no more engine light after another 4 hours of driving. I guess the good thing is I might have been right in my diagnosis, but I am guessing I need a new a/c compressor? Any use trying a scrap yard, or new/rebuilds the only way to go?
Does this seem accurate based on my limited description? Any other problems that could have happened since I had to drive a little ways before finding a remedy(I was stuck in traffic on the GW bridge and was at a point of no return to NJ from LI)? It seems ok now, but then again, once this started if a strong wind hit my car I would have a brief heart failure thinking it was happening all over again...
Thanks for any help or hints, this site has been my savior a few times before!
