It is an interference engine. You probably don't need to buy a new engine, but pistons and valves will be damaged. However, timing chain breakage is a rare thing, and timing chains regularly run over 200K miles. They usually give plenty of warning. OK, not always, but in the great majority of cars.
Yes, the car has AC. It is a very simple system, which is why it works so well. The knob controls the heater valve. All the way to the left, and the heater valve is OFF (not really, but you'll get no heat). Turn the knob right, and you get more heat. That simple.
Push the AC switch, and the AC turns on. It cycles on and off all by itself, pouring out cold air. You want cold? Turn the heat knob to the left, and push the AC switch. That simple.
The AC making you feel too cold? Turn the fan down. Usually not a big problem in Saabs. Where this system comes in handy is that you can use the AC AND heat at the same time. Say it's a 50 degree rainy day. Turn on the heat to keep warm, and hit the AC button. The AC will dry out the incomming air, and you'll get nice dry, warm air to defrost the windows and make you feel less clammy.
