It turned out to be a bad rheostat (dimmer switch) for the dashboard illumination. The one immediately in front of the turn signal stalk. Somehow the wires had heated up and twisted together, shorting out.
Unscrew the 4 long bolts holding the instrument panel to the dash, and pull the panel out a few inches on the left (driver's door) side of the steering wheel. Make sure that the insulation to the dimmer switch is intact.
If you can find a good replacement switch, replace it. I found that my switch worked in certain spots and shorted out in others, so I left it in a "good" position and don't touch it now.
