Well, I think I damaged my 85 900S while playing Per Ecklund yesterday. :( The car is up at my friends cabin about 2.5 hours from here so I need to get as knowledgable as I can before I go up there to work on it.

I was warned that my CV Joint/Boot was going. I've been acquiring other parts (brakes, ball joints) to do at the same time but was hoping that it would last another month or so. Apparently not.

I took it out for a spin on some dirt roads near the cabin where there was a beautiful S-curve. It was great! :) Well, at one point I nailed a large pot hole. Everything felt okay and I drove back to the Cabin and parked the car. Some friends commented that they heard a noise as I pulled in. I hadn't heard it (windows closed).

I started the car back up again and whenever turning the wheel, it would make a clicking, banging noise. I tried reversing a little bit and the car moved but then a new noise developed. The new noise only occurs when the clutch is engaged (pedal released). It does not matter where I've got the stick. If the clutch is disengaged it does not make any noise. If I engage the clutch, the noise starts and increased with engine speed (and probably gear speed). As I disenagage, the frequency of the noise decreases until it it stops. I had a friend doing this and I can see movement near the CV joint on the drivers side. I also found a broken ring and 3 bearings where the car stopped. I'm not certain it's the CV joint but since I was warned and given the symptoms, I believe it is. Correct?

Next, the transmission. I seem to receive good feedback as I row the gears with the clutch disengaged. HOWEVER, there are 2 possible odd things. First, with the car off, the key in the on position and the clutch engaged (off the pedal) I can move the stick from gear to gear. This does not seem normal but I guess I've never tried on this car. Also, the noise and movement at the front of the car near the CV joint is made even if the stick is in the neutral position as I engage the clutch.

I would think that if the transmission is in neutral, no power should make it to the CV joint? Am I, as I fear, stuck in the last gear (reverse)? The reverse gate seems to still work and I seem to feel positive feedback from the transmission (as though it's shifting). I also felt the synchros prohibiting a couple shifts. Ideas? Damn I hope the transmission is not damaged.

Thanks everyone. I'll be going up there tomorrow morning so if you have any hints on things to examine, I'd appreciate it greatly!

Bryce
