There are a few equivalents on the market. You will not be able to purchase them at your car parts stores because they are not federally approved. I believe they are mail order. If you use one of these "drop ins" and an AC shop knows it is in there, they will not work on your system, because it is considered contaminated. They can evacuate the R-12, reclaim, and reuse it. It will contaminate their supply. My advise? If your R-12 system is in very good condition, and you have verified that you have NO leaks, replace the receiver dryer, expansion valve(cheap insurance) take an online test(I think I did mine with Mainstream Engineering) They buy R-12 legally at your local parts store. If you have to replace a compressor, convert it over to R-134a. It is much cheaper than R-12, you dont need a lisence to buy it(yet). A manifold setup is a couple of pressure/vaccuum guages with long hoses that hook up to the compressor at the same time so that you can see the operating pressure of your AC system. By watching these numbers you can more accuratly add refrigerant. Please be aware that the operating pressures are a function of the ambiant outside temperature. The higher the temp outside, the higher the operating pressures in the system. That is why the manifold set is important. Boy I really got long winded on this one. Sorry, hope this helps Ryan.
