Check to see whether there's a recent indent in the under-bonnet insulation above the distributor cap. Sometimes the front motor mount fails and the distributor contacts the insulation as the front of the engine rises under acceleration. If the distrbutor cap gets knocked while it's contacting the insulation, it will lose electrical contact.
Another possibility is that the black plastic connector on the side of the distributor has deteriorated after years of being subjected to the heat of the turbo and, as the engine moves under load, loses and remakes electrical contact.
Does the tachometer drop down to zero when this is occurring?
