It's possible the Rover went so lean with lessened backpressure that it affected acceleration.

Yes, lessened backpressure normally results in more power, but it can reduce torque or make torque peakier.

I had one instance of a 73 Jaguar V12 with 4 (Zenith/Stromberg?) CV carbs that came from the factory with an Abarth free flow exhaust system...the Abarth option was on the window sticker for cryin out loud. The car ate plugs (12 of them, count em!) every 600 miles and the guy (my next door neighbor in Tanglewood Terrace in College STation, TX) was going nuts driving the car back to Okie City to get the dealer to fix it. I took one look at the plugs which were white and blistered and suggested he have the dealer rejet and reneedle the carbs. Two jets bigger and one needle bigger and the car ran cleanly through 150mph with chocolate plugs.
