I bought a 1993 Ford Escort 5spd a year ago with 103kmi on it for $1,500
I've run it for a little over a year now and besides normal maintance it has only needed a MAF sensor and an alternator 210kmi (both factory originals). The car is still running strong and *knock on wood* doesn't burn any oil at 215,000 miles and is getting ready for a cross country trip. They had good years and bad years... you can check them in a used car rating guide as is recomended for any car you're looking at.
I have also had good luck with subaru. I have had 4 so far (2 loyalle's 2 XT's years '87-'90) all of which have been driven beyond 260,000 miles with only normal maintance. Two made it there with the factory water pump and alternator! Beware automatic loyalle's though they're as bad as Saab's auto's. Newer auto's in the legacy and impreza are ok.
I would beware chryslers and GM if you're looking for an inexpensive car that will last without wearing out. These in my experience just seem to wear out and get really tired feeling (body and drive train) at about 150kmi.
If you're wondering... I'm a courier and drive over 500 miles a day. I have also heard that Honda's are good cars but I don't have any personal experience with them... well except my new accord coupe which is great so far.. but then again it's new
Hope this helps
-Joel
