It's my understanding that when you lose 5th gear, there's possible pinion bearing problems (guy at Saab dealer told me that 5th gear is closest to pinion bearing and most sensitive to misalignment caused by bearing wear.) Do you get a whine in 3rd at 30mph?
My '85 SPG had never seen a fluid change until last month at 142000 miles, and the magnetic drain plug resembled an odd sort of Chia pet. It was not pretty. My 5th gear synchro is gone also, and I need to baby it into 5th, but other than that it's okay, I think.
Know what you might try, now that I think of it... instead of just letting the shifter find its way to the right as you move up from 4th, push it to the right (not hard.) My linkage is a bit out of whack, and I know I sometimes have to guide it farther to the right than it would go if I just pushed it up into 5th.
Good luck and happy Saabing!
