I just got a cousin's 1990 900 (5 sp) with 70K miles. I was looking for work to have done on it. It hasn't been maintained much except for
1.oil changes religiously every 90-100 days (more often than every 1500 miles),
2.coolant every year,
3.spark plugs and wires/distributor at 69,000 miles
4.upper radiator hose changed as a precaution at 69,000 miles
5.air filter, brake fluid/clutch fluid at 69,000 miles. AC belt and fuel filter last year
Should I change the transmission oil, more hoses, belts, thermostat, or radiator cap? How about draining the power steering fluid (if it's possible)? Should I overkill and change the battery or water pump? How about the charcoal canister? The headliner is sagging, there are a few cracks in the dash, and the electric antennae needs a boost by pushing down before it retracts electrically (none of these are personally bothersome). I would like to keep the car for 4-5 years/40,000 mi. more.
