The knee bolster isn't such a big deal once you know how it comes on & off.
You'll need to remove the driver-side speaker/vent cover in order to detach the heater control rod. The heater valve itself comes easily out (and in) from the top.
You'll find that three of the four bolts on the heater valve are straightforward, and one of them is a royal pita. I eventually was able to finger-tighten the "difficult" bolt with a socket (I forget whether it was hex or torx) enough that it doesn't leak now. There's barely enough room to fit a socket up there, and not a chance in hell of turning it with a ratchet handle.
