If the fluid is still red, or close to it, by all means change it. If you don't flush it all, at least change what is in the pan. Then drive a while to mix, and repeat the operation.
If the fluid is nasty black, smells bad and looks worse, it is a toss-up. At that point the transmission is possibly already dead, and changing the fluid will prove that. On the other hand, changing the fluid may keep it alive for several more years.
If the fluid is good now, use synthetic ATF that meets the Ford Type F spec (AMSOIL makes one). If the fluid is nasty, start with a case of inexpensive (non-synthetic) which meets Type F and change it at least 3 times. Then, if it is still running, go to synthetic ATF.
While you are under there, at least check the level of the fluid in the final drive. Top off if necessary. For better results, drain it and replace with synthetic 75w-90 gear lube. Plan to check the level at least every year--if can ooze out without leaving drops on the pavement.
