I had a 900 with one of these late transmissions a few years ago. You're a bit better off to have the level between the notches rather than below the low one. It won't hurt if it's a bit low for a few days of normal driving, but don't forget that the oil aids the dissipation of heat generated in the transmission. As long as the level isn't high enough to get air entrainment in the oil, there's enough contact with the transmission case
And ... while you're down there, you should change the oil in the transmission. Why? When you remove the back cover and drain the oil into a container, you'll probably find that there's a sheen of metal particles (some steel, some brass) in the oil. This stuff doesn't usually leave the transmission through a leak - it collects in the bottom layers of the oil. These metal particles don't help the longevity of the transmission bearings, synchros, or gear faces.
For the "life of the car" that you mention, as far as the manufacturer is concerned, the car's life ends the day the warranty expires and they don't have to spend a kroner on a failed part. There's been a lot of discussion over the last few years about changing manual transmission oil. Some say yes, a very few say no. The evidence is that, if you follow the proper procedure to do the change, you'll extend the life of the transmission.
