Checking the fuel pump is really easy...have done it myself and I am not a mechanic. Yes, the pump is under that large round plate. I suggest you open all the doors on your car and fold the rear seat so that you get good ventilation back there. Do not play around with extra 12 volt battery because you could get a spark which may ignite the fuel fumes. First remove the fuel line on top of the pump. Some fuel will come out so have some paper towels ready to soak it all up. Remove the rubber bellow in which the pump is placed by unscrewing the round metal band. Then lift the whole unit out of the tank being careful not to drop any tools you might have used into the tank.
You will find a feeder pump and a main pump as you lift the unit up. Make not of how all the wires are connected and label if necessary and then disconnect all the cables. Remove the small feeder pump, and then take the pumps to a separate battery where you can check their operation. If they spin when you apply electricity they are OK. Beware of fuel spurting out of the main pump though even after you may have emptied it when you test it.
The main pump has failed me twice and I have noticed that tapping on it in the trunk would get it going again. This works for a while but it really will need replacement, so even if the pump works when you have taken it out of the tank it may fail on you again soon. I am paying $100 for them used...
Installation is reverse of removal, making sure you get your cables back on correctly. Ground yourself by touching the car before you head back in their to install it to avoid sparks...
Hope this helped.
Marcus
