IMHO, a CD changer (which I don't think were in cars in '87 at all) is not worth $600. I got mine at Best Buy with the head unit (not an FM modulated one) for about $300 (open box).
Go to a Saab shop and they will know what to look for. If you go to any other shop, even if you have a list of things to check, they will not know a "good" from a "marginal" transmission, front brake caliper, steering rack leak, blah, blah, blah. ("I'm not going to test drive that car, sir. I backed up and the front brake calipers are obviously in need of replacement before it will be roadworthy!")
A Saab shop will know the list backwards and forwards, and not just typical 900 stuff, but exactly what an 87 900 will need.
A brief example: my first "modern" Saab was going to be a '93 9K from an independent used car lot. I mentioned it to my local shop (Gesch Enterprise), and they told me that the '93's have chronic -- and expensive -- engine mount failures. Whether that's been anyone else's experience or not I do not know, because for half of that asking price I drove off Gesch's lot with a 900SPG. They also happened to know the 9K I was looking at (they had worked on it for that dealer!), so they knew THAT car quite well.
