Thanks, John. I appreciate it.
The first butcher also unknowingly busted an oil sensor connecting wire when he installed the alt (I didn't mention this in the first post - this was actually the first repair needed a couple of weeks after the alt install). According to Saab, this is apparently a common problem. Putting that together with the fact they couldn't be bothered to put in new bushings and deal with the AC hose properly, I had zero confidence in these guys. I think I would have risked a trainee auto school first.
I am really bummed about the money (turned out to be just over $500 and no work on the AC), but I have stopped a while ago giving REALLY lame mechanics a second chance - in the past I have really regretted believing promises to fix mistakes at face value - usually something else ends up busted. If I had the time to deal with it I would have brought it to one of the shops recommended in Saabnet, but that would have entailed a second pricey tow, so maybe it was just a no-win situation.
Nostaligia is welling up for the days when I worked on my cars (a finicky Datsun 240z and electrically challenged MGBs). Somehow the work on nice days followed by beer are far more memorable than the work in the rain that took days and left sore joints and scraped knuckles.
