Retrofitting new style timing chain tensioner...

Hello folks, my 86 SPG needs a new tensioner (I have a new style one all shiny new). I was told that most folks on here have had to pull the A/C compressor out of the way to get at it. I know for sure (because I did it once) that this is not necessary. There is a hole in the compressor mounting bracket (stupidly placed a half inch off). I forgot how I got it off the last time on my other 900T, but I think if I can get a 1/2" universal on an extension on a breakerbar and put the socket in from the underside of the bracket it should be able to come off.
I know someone else has had to have done it this way. Anyway, once I get a half-inch universal I should be good. I just am wondering if I will have enough clearance to get the *new* timing chain tensioner in there with this same method? The new one is a little taller with the bolt in the top.
Finally, when installing the new style tensioner, the bentley is a little confusing. Should I leave the "piston" part on the bottom of the tensioner all the way in when installing? The bentley says that it can be preset but why and how would I know what to preset to? Should I just put it in and pull the saftey pin and be done with it? Do I have to turn the bolt on the top? That's the main question.. how does this new style one work? Thanks!
