I'll try to sum up what I've been thinking and what I've seen from others.
1) Spark plugs. I once had a Volvo 244 and one day it wouldn't run over 80
kmh (±50 mph). On checking the plugs I found a broken one. It had actually
broken in the middle! Easy fix.
2) Spark plug cables. When they get old they can get to leak to the ground
and cause a cylinder to miss. Cleaning sometimes helps, only for a while,
but you get to know what your problem is.
Also please make sure they're all on tight!
3) Ignition order. Easy to check. If you have a
Bentley, it's page 340-4. If not: the firing order is 1-3-4-2. Standing in
front of the car, the rotor in the distributor turns counterclockwise. The 1
is to the far right on the distributor, so the 3 is on top, the 4 on the
left side, and the 2 is on the bottom. The cylinders number 1 to 4 from the firewall to the front. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!
4) Timing cam chain off mark. Could also explain a lot. But you have to
pull the valve cover to see....
5) Others have mentioned oil pressure problems. I don't know. There's
supposed to be a light warning you for that.
6) You had a post about your brakes; 'brake pedal hard.' I still think
there might be something there: brakes touching, running hot, causing
noise, etc. - not much of a chance though, I admit.
7) Springs to my mind just now: You might want to check the intake side of
the engine too for false air being sucked in anywhere. Could be manifold,
injectors, loose vacuum hoses...
So far...best of luck.
