Unexpected turbo whine caused by dying engine mounts?

It was a beautiful day for replacing the starter and power steering pump on my venerable 82T. Exhaust manifold had to be removed to get at the starter. While under there I decided to clean and check whatever I could. Discovered the turbo oil return line connection (big nut) on the engine block was loose - that explained a mystery oil leak. I then decided to remove the return pipe for an inspection and cleaning. Lots of gritty stuff inside the first bend attached to the turbo. The Turbo return port was also impacted with grit (hardened oil from a hot turbo shaft). I cleaned all that grit out as best I could, installed a fresh gasket, tightened everything up, job done. Time for a test drive.

To my surprise, I'm now hearing a serious whining sound from the turbo upon boost. The max boost (10 psi)is fine, and a recent inspection of the turbo shaft turned up no excess play or unusual binding. By cleaning out the gunk at the return port, thus freeing up the oil flow, how would that have negatively effected the turbo? Or is that normal?

One possibility is that with all my recent successful efforts to remove all possible vacuum leaks and obtain maximum stock performance (now at 10 psi), I've also increased the load stress on the tranny, engine mounts, drive shafts, bearings and so forth. I can now feel considerable engine torque at max boost where I didn't before. I've also recently noticed considerable vibration at certain engine rpm's which suggests the strong possibility of bad engine mounts. So if the mounts are dying and getting more dead with each drive, and considering that I first noticed the excess turbo whine (and increased vibration) after my WOT test drive last night, maybe I shifted the engine weight that much more against the chassis frame, thus causing the normal sound of the turbo to reach the inside of the cabin that much more effectively.

As far as noises reaching the cabin, I do know that the flexible rubber tube connected to the clutch line just outside the slave cylinder absorbs sounds from the primary gear and clutch. When I replaced that strip of rubber tubing (which had ruptured) with copper tubing on a previous 900, I immediately noticed the sounds from the clutch area making their way into the cabin.

I'm trying to convince myself that the turbo is fine. And that the vibration isn't a dying tranny, pinion bearing or drive shaft. I'd much rather replace engine mounts than a tranny.

Anyone had this experience?
