You might pick it up for next to nothing, but what are you going to spend to get it running? Assume you fix the seal - how often has the tranny been run with low fluid, and the innards are medium bordering on well done?
Did the guy just park it because of the transmission, or was there some other reason it stopped running? Do you trust the previous owner to tell you the truth? I would be very worried about a car that hasn't been started in a year, and probably wasn't put away properly. The fuel lines will be gummed up, to say the least. I'd expect some corrosion in the cylinders and bottom end. Since they probably didn't do an oil change before the car was left for a year, any acids and water that was in the oil have had a year to chew up the bearings.
I would think this 'free' could be very expensive, unless you feel like a project, and have lots of parts lying around. And then when you're done, you have a non-turbo tied to the famous three-speed automatic - not the fastest car ever to hit the open road. If I were to invest that kind of time, I would at least get a turbo.
Seeing as you can get a 900 in running condition for $1500 or so, I would avoid this one even for free. Not unless you need a parts car, and the interior is in great shape.
Just my opinion.
