What happens when heater hoses are crossed???

I have the pleasure (?) of having two identical cars ('86 900T). Those of you in the same boat, however, know there is no such thing as identical cars. One difference between these two cars is that the two heater hoses are connected to different positions on the firewall/heater valve. Another difference is that on one car, the heat is always on.
Questions for the experienced: Does it matter which heater hose is connected to which pipe on the heater valve? Could crossed heater hoses cause the valve to be "open" at all times?
Thanks, folks.
Tom
