I do not know about a $5-600. conversion. A 'conversion kit' is about 40.00 (fittings, labels, o-rings) the R134 is 6.00/lb. If a hose set is needed they are <100 (16V, 8V is more and would probably be cheaper to have barrier hose put on the existing ends at an A/C shop). Receiver dryer is 30.00. If the work is done and you then take it for a purge/charge, it will still be less than 500. If a hose is bad or the compressor is bad, it will still not work. on my '89, I fixed the obvious, replaced the o-rings, put on the fittings, drained as much old oil as I could and charged it up to see how long it would hold and if the compressor was good. It held a winter long and still cools. Now I will flush the system replace the dryer, have it sucked down properly and charged.
