Replaced the front shocks last weekend. I bought a special socket that holds the flat sides on the end of the shock rod. Worked great on the driver's side shock. BUT, I could not get the bottom (of the two) nuts off of the passenger side. I tried everything I could think of to keep the rod from turning. So I resorted to what a bunch of you suggested, I cut the rod. BUT, after cutting the rod I could not pull it out because of a metal cap (part of the plastic hood) that was set in a lip in the rod. So, I had to cut the rod a second time above the cap where the rubber bushing is. Finally got the old schock off. So, before cutting, make sure you don't have that metal cap to get around.
Results: no more thunking sound when I go over bumps, and no more jittery front wheel over bumps. I just got $30 gas shocks from the local autoparts store. They were made by Gabriel.
