I did mine after my son took the '89 900S to school and hit a curb. The curb pushed the engine back a little and damaged the front mount, which resulted in the shifter losing 5th and reverse.
I did not remove the fan. Did remove the shroud under the engine. With the fan in place, the bottom bolt on the strap fastening the rubber mount to the engine was extremely difficult to remove (there is just no room to wrench it). But it can be done.
Took me about an hour. That is for installing the mount. Realigning the shifter afterward took another hour.
