I've had a few tech calls this week which have reminded me that many people pay too little attention to FIRE SAFETY. Forgive me for being an alarmist for just a minute...
I lost one friend last year in a house fire, and another friend lost his house (and his racecar) to a garage fire shortly after that. Two years ago, an acquaintance lost his "brand new" '39 Caddy when an engine fire erupted the first night he drove it.

CHECK YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS. Make sure they have not leaked or otherwise discharged. Make sure they are suitable for extinguishing garage-type fires (ABC rating). And don't skimp! A 2.5 pound extinguisher is easy to carry, but won't put out the fire if you weld too close to your full 5-gallon waste oil bucket.
You don't have a fire extinguisher in your garage??? Get one! Get two, they're small! Put one by the door, and one by the walk-through door on the house side (so you can reach one without having to walk through the fire). And some homeowner's insurance policies provide for credit when you buy extinguishers (some others require a minimum number of extinguishers and/or smoke detectors per square foot of your home).
Fire extinguisher types: Halon is clean (no clean-up) but expensive. Dry chem is cheap but very messy afterwards. Water is useless on 90% of automotive fires.
If you have an older car you treasure, carry one with you (Antique Auto Club of America requires an extinguisher in every car participating in a club event. SCCA requires extinguishers or on-board fire systems in all competition cars).
Smokey and Fire Marshall Bill thank you!
