Re: Cooling Fan is Killing me Posted by Kevin K [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Cooling Fan is Killing me, Adam ![]() |
not normal, fan should kick on at 2/3, bad rad likely.
simple cold start, headlights on, test:
(assume proper oem 92C fan switch, 87C t-stat are used)
1) start cold, and let idle. after few minutes, gage rises to 50% (40% with colder 82C t-stat), then stays there. upper rad hose should suddenly get warm at this time.
** if gage just keeps rising and upper hose is not hot, bad t-stat likely. lesser chance sensor, or gage. (Bentley manual checks)
2) after few more minutes, all water in rad is now warmed up to t-stat opening point, and gage will slowly rise again. Both fans (1 fan on 2.1L) should come on at 2/3 on gage (3/4 in winter time).
a) if gage rises higher, and fans kick on near red:
- check gage and sensor as above
- put few drops of water on metal spool in upper rad hose. if they boil off violently, bad rad or fan switch.
Also be sure to have dealer do the TSB to get both fans to come on, not just one. If done, eng running, jump wires to fan switch together and BOTH fans come on (AC off).
With AC off, cruising at 60mph, gage should be at 1/2 with std t-stat, or 40% with lower temp (82C t-stat). No fans needed for this.
