Ignition key won't turn !?!

Hello,
I am in the midst of replacing my turbo in a '91 900TC automatic. I have had the battery disconnected for about 6 weeks. I went to move the car (push it) yesterday, now that I have my new turbo ready to install, and to my surprise the key would not turn. I need it to turn so that I can get the shifter out of park.
I can't understand why it would change, because I was able to put the car in neutral and move it a few weeks ago (I had to move it out of someone's way) and the battery was disconnected at that time, so I am at a loss why it would have changed.
I removed the cover from the ignition key / shifter tunnel, and I see that next to the shift stick there are two wires (green and black)that go to some sort of sensor or switch mounted on the shift assembly. These wires were no longer attached. I tried attaching the battery terminals and holding them in place , thinking this was perhaps a park position sensor which locked the key if not in park, but had no success.
Otherwise I can say that the key may not be going in all the way. Hard to say because I never paid much attention in the past, since it worked fine. Perhaps someone tried to start the car with some small tool and the tip broke off in the lock?
Anyway, after tackling a relatively complex job like a turbo replacement, I hate to be stopped short by something as seemingly trivial as the ignition key, yet I am stumped.
Please Help!!!!!
-Ross
