I also have a 1990...maybe it is year specific, that was the first year for ABS.

It has happened to me as I said 4 different times. 1st time, car was taken to dealer. They cleaned sensors and replaced pads & discs on front. 2nd time, stopped car, waited 20 minutes, restarted car...lights go out but slooowly. Same story on the 3rd and 4th episodes.

The thing is, it only happens when the outside temp is above 80 degrees. I can sit in traffic all day long in the winter and the problem will never happen.

So...this leads me to believe that it is a pressure building problem with the ABS pump that occurs when it overheats. The combination of frequent braking and the outside temp plus the even higher temp under the hood causes the pump to overheat. I really think it is a design flaw. The pump can not cool properly.

Whatever you do however when and if this occurs again....DO NOT PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL!!! YOU WILL LOSE ALL PRESSURE AS ARI DESCRIBED AND HIT SOMEONE IN THE REAR. Don't mean to shout but I could have easily found that out the hard way the first time this happened to me. Thank goodness I found the little bit of intelligence that I have and pumped the pedal while I was pulled off of the road...not in traffic. The pedal will kind of buffet and then go to the floor. SCARY in an otherwise very safe vehicle (tank).

Go light on the pedal until you can get off the road(helps if it's a 5-speed) Pull over, turn the car off and let it sit about 20 minutes. Restart and wait for the lights to go out...if they don't, wait a bit longer. This can be a real PIA if you really have to be somewhere but...what are the alternatives.

Maybe replacing the pump is the thing to do.
