How I did it...

Bob,
I recently went through the same job. Here's how I did it. Loosen the nut on top of the alternator and remove the adjusting bracket, this will allow the alternator to move towards the engine and allow you to slip off the belts. Now, let the alternator fall towards the outside of the car, you'll notice that the heater hoses to the inside of the car may cause an obstruction. Remove the heater hoses from the fire wall, and carefully tuck them out of the way, you should now have an un obstructed path to the screws on the voltage regulator. All in all, not too bad of a job, the VR just slides in. Be sure not to cross the belts when you put them back on, and don't forget to bleed your cooling system with the valve on top of the thermostat to ensure you wont have air bubbles restricting the coolant. Thats it.
