I have an electric pump in my 1978 99T and after over two months of rigorous testing, I can say it works perfectly in a Saab. I'm positive it could be made to work in a 900.
The pump is made by Australian manufacturer Davies-Craig. It is very well engineered and fairly easy to install. Link below has information on the pump from thier website. (click on "EWP"). The pump kit costs around $150 US, the optional controller is another $150.
You can hook up the pump to run continuously, or purchase the optional control unit which takes the place of the engine thermostat and controls the speed of pump. I have hooked up the pump using both methods and found that the controller is the best setup since it uses less draw on the alternator than continuous operation. The controller also significantly lengthens the life of the pump - the pump is rated at 2000 hours of continuous use.
Converting to the electric pump involves removing the original pump, and plugging the block cavities with freeze plugs. There is also some custom plumbing necessary but all the parts can be found at a local auto parts store. The pump is installed externally, next to the original pump, under the intake manifold. I believe the conversion could be done by a backyard mechanic. The only tough part is removing the original pump which requires a puller. The intake manifold and alternator need to be removed as well.
I am building a website that explains the electric pump conversion - it is almost finished. The site has photos of the installation, a parts list and step-by-step instructions. I will have the site running this weekend and will post the link here and on the "other models" board.
Good luck, and keep that '79 on the road!
