Get a calibrated boost gauge. It's the only way you'll know if you're making enough boost. On an 8v, you can use a cheapo 10psi Pep Boys vacuum/pressure gauge - they only make 10psi (max) and usually around 8psi. My '84 900T 5-speed boosted about two needlewidths before the red...
Comparison? The 16v has more low-end grunt due to higher compression, which means better performance off the line. The 16v has better breathing and more boost, so it performs better at high RPM. The 16v is, IMHO, better. :) With an automatic, I find the 8v (T or no) to be unreasonably slow - the 16vTs aren't much better. Saabs need 5-speeds...
