My 91 has the trimmed clips but I still had scratched glass. Relaced the glass @ $80 a pop, then to make d@mn sure I wouldn' be scratching the glass again (hope anyway), I used sheet metal v-grips to bend the lip that the outer molding slides onto, to an angle and distance from the glass (also by pulling the sheet metal out by hand) that should allow proper clearance for road grit to flush out of the velcro-like glass contact strip. Also, by angling the lip, I tried to get the tightest rubber-to-glass contact seal to keep grit from building up.
The old clips are one scratch source, but even the trimmed ones leave an area built up under the moulding (like a speed bump thing) that, coupled with the velcro-like cilia, tend to catch stuff like quartz road grit & hold it up to the glass, that WILL scratch glass very nicely, thank you.
So far my glass is nice & unscratched. Then again, I try to open the windows as little as pos.
