I just bought a 93 318is w/100K miles as a project car (ran out of work to do on the spg) and here's a list of "quirky" fixes that I've done so far. Stuff that the engineers messed up.
1) New alternator (OEM Valeos for this car are notoriously unreliable).
2) New water pump (OEM used "plastic" impellers, which tended to disintegrate at inopportune moments. (replaced as precaution).
3) New rear springs, to replace a busted spring.
4) In process of replacing a/c condenser, because they mounted them too close to the radiator & the rubbing causes refrigerant leaks.
Other "engineering marvels":
E-box (cpu) tends to flood out in carwashes (92-94) because they installed too little drainage. (simple $1000 cpu replacement)
Weak rear shock tower mounts, that tend to deform the towers if driven hard or with aftermarket suspensions.
Sticky ignition locks, because the left out a simple return spring from 92-97.
Now then, don't you all appreciate your Saabs a bit more?
