I know, I know, it's like a dead horse, but even after reading all the different questions about inner drivers, I still want to be 100% sure that mine need replacing before I have it done last week.

My local mechanic (non saab certified but very good import mechanic) looked at the car today (1989 900S auto) and wasn't 100% sure what was causing my vibration. Practically everyone has told me (on here and other places) that it is the inner drivers.

Basically, the car shudders (severly when really cold) mainly in two different situations: when idling with gear in Drive and foot on the brake, and when accelerating away from a stop. It gradually seems to dissapate as the speed increase (probably just less noticable as other things - i.e road/wind noise increase). When driving on winding roads, you can also feel slight shudders as you go around curves under acceleration, or as the car rise over hills and the load momentarily rises off of the suspension. Nothing nearly as bad as the vibration when idling or acclerating.

A couple of notes: if you slide the tranny into Neutral - the vibration is gone - and the car is really smooth and quiet (well, for a car with almost 200K miles on it!) AND, if, while your foot is on the brake and the tranny is in Drive, and then you slide the tranny into 1st, the vibration just momentarily changes intensity (for lack of a better work) and then returns back to the "normal" vibration intensity and severity.

The motor mounts were replaced, so I know it's not that. The mechanic said that he can get both front axles (complete assemblies) for $160 and change - does that sound reasonable? I thought it sounded cheap, but he said that's the entire assembly.

I know there are always questions on Inner drivers on here, but I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me on this.

thanks,
Rob Catron
