You are right on wheel bearing growl being unrelated to bumps, and CVjoints are inboard of any steering mechanism, so they can be ruled out.
First, check your tie rod ends. Jack up wheel and pull back and forth on tire, if you see slop in tie rod end, that's it.
Then check balljoints, jack up front end with spacers between upper control arms and frame (pull wheel). Squeeze ball joints with big channel lock and check for lateral looseness by prying with a big screwdriver. Also make sure that ball joint bolts through control arms are tight. Ball joint problems will usually give you a cluck over bumps.
Make sure upper and lower control arm brackets are tight and that you don't have any badly worn control arm bushings.
