%#$&@#$#@! Alternator Hell (long)

Ok guys, I'm begging for help here.
I started my alternator bushing job this afternoon. Let me just say that the alternator is still in the car.
I successfully disconnected the battery and the wires to the alternator. I successfully loosened the alternator pivot bolt and removed the adjusting bolt. I then successfully took the belts off the alt pulley, and left them dangling over the water pump pulley. I successfully used a long extension, swivel, and 6mm bit to remove the forward (i.e. front of car) 6mm hex bolt on the alternator bracket. With much hellatious effort with a 12mm box end wrench (Chip, could only find ones with a slight angle at the end, or offset ones, but they weren't combo wrenches), I successfully have loosened the 12mm bolt common to the alternator and AC mounts.
I attempted unsuccessfully to remove the AC belt. The idle pulley mounting bolt that's deeper inside and lower, near the pulley, refused to budge. However, my greatest failure has been that @$@!$^#$ 17mm bolt. I can't come up with any conceivable way to get the thing off. At one stage I managed to get a wrench onto the firewall side and a ratchet onto the other side with room to turn...but the whole alternator rotated toward the engine when I tried to turn the ratchet, crushing my arm holding the wrench. If I hold the oil filter side with a wrench, there's no room to turn a ratchet at the firewall end. So after a couple hours of struggling with it, I've called it a night. Can anyone please offer tips to help me with this? I've considered removing the heater hoses, but honestly it doesn't look like it buys me much wrench turning room...there's some other little hose thing with a spring attaching at the firewall that would prevent it anyway. I'm pretty sure I can weasel the alternator out once I get the damn 17mm bolt and/or the AC.
Help!!!!
