Went through the same experience; the steering felt too light and loose - unnerving for such a sure-footed car. Tech's said the car aligned fine, but I just didn't buy it. So cleaned house: one weekend, four ball joints, and both tie rod ends later (and a new alignment), problem solved - steering is now TIGHT (two BJ were 5 yr old, the others older, the tie ends possibly original?).
If any of the ball joints have much play, your alignment will be wishy washy while driving. I'll speculate that sloppy tie ends give vague steering input/feedback, but I don't factually know that - just inferring from this experience.
Use Bentley or ask your tech to check if those parts are w/in spec.
