I am 17 and driving a manual is one of the things that totally gives you bragging rights when you are a teen. Unless your son is some kind of a wuss and is afraid of driving now way should you give him an auto. My grandma can drive an auto, it requires no skill or thought.
So anyway, do the manly thing and let him have a manual, maybe you should even let him do some of the repairs, it is a great learning experience, physics in real life. I as a teen did an auto to manual conversion and rebuilt a tranny. That's how much I wanted a stick.
