You can drive quite a way with no alternator. If the battery is good, and you keep your electrical loads to a minimum (no headlights, no AC, fan off, and stay off the brakes - those brake lights take a lot of current!) you can go quite a way. It isn't miles - it's time. More time, more battery drain.
The water pump is different. If the engine is cold (as I assume it is), you could start the car and immediately drive it a few hundred yards. Maybe a little more. You wouldn't be able to trust the temperature gauge, because with no flow, you'd be getting hot spots away from the pickup. But the engine has a pretty decent thermal mass, and running it for a few minutes (3-5) wouldn't do any damage. But no more than that - just to the high ground and shut it off!
