I had the same problems when I was in undergrad when I put a SONY
into my Fiat X1/9. The unit was really junk in all regards. Over-
priced because of the SONY name. I'm afraid they take advantage
of their good name. It was funny that by far the Italian machine
was better engineered quality wise than the Japanese machine.
Anyway, since then I've put a Blaupunkt into my C900, and I'm very
pleased. Good quality plastic, solid design, just overall great...
If you get one from Crutchfield they give you all you need to install
it. I just don't like the current aesthetics of most of their line
at the moment. I think other good companies will be Kenwood, Pioneer,
etc.
